Researching the Route of the Hiawatha bike trail before we actually rode it was an undertaking in and of itself. Not just enough for your picnic, but for an extra day or two in the off chance you get stranded. Also, bring extra clothes and warm jackets for everyone in your group. If you are stuck in the wilderness, having some protective clothing is important for survival. Also, wear good shoes, or even better, hiking boots. Having to make the long walk is not pleasant, having to do it in sandals borders on torture. And most importantly, bring more than enough water. Having to lug a lot of water around is not fun, and often seems pointless; that is until you need it.
